AMERICAN STUDIES Spring 1995 Vol. 9, No. 1 ARTICLES THE U.S. POLITICO-CULTURAL SPLIT AND EVOLUTION OF U.S. POLITICS Jin Canrong(7) The American politico-cultural split refers to the situation in which dissensions among policy viewpoints are interwoven with conflicts of cultural values. It is different from the social split. Neither is it a mere political split nor a cultural one. It came into being with the advent of the New Deal, developed in the post-WWII period (especially in the 1960s) and got into shape in the early 1970s. Since the New Deal, developments of American society, in all its aspects, have been affected considerably by the split, and so has been the political process. The right swing of the U.S. political pendulum in the past two years and the unfavorable image of Bill Clinton can all be accounted for by this pattern of political-cultural split. RE-CONCEPTUALIZING SINO-AMERICAN RELATIONS Jia Qingguo(29) How to depict the nature and patterns of development of Sino-American relations is a controversial issue. In general one can identify three basic views: (1) that the relationship is basically friendly; (2) that it is basically hostile; and (3) that like a pendulum it swings between excessive friendship and undue hostility. This essay first sketches these three views. Then it critically examines these views against some historical facts. Finally, it attempts to identify and analyze some deeper, structural factors shaping the relationship and on that basis proposes a new explanatory model. According to the new model, the Sino-American relationship is neither friendly nor hostile and its shifts are not as extreme and regular as the pendulum analogy would suggest. Instead, it moves between limited conflicts and cooperation. The new model also argues that the role of the two governments in shaping the relationship between the two countries is greater than what the traditional views are ready to admit. STUDIES OF SINO-U.S. RELATIONS IN AMERICA (1969-1992) Zi Zhongyun and Ji Hong(50) Studies in the United States of the history and current situation of the Sino-U.S. relationship began in the late 1960s. Considerable progress has been made along with the continuing improvement of the relationship since then. A large number of books and articles have been published, covering political, military, economic and cultural aspects of the subject. There are also comparative studies dealing with mutual images and conceptual frameworks. This paper aims at deepening the understanding and studying of Sino-U.S. relations by way of reviewing these studies. LITERATURE IN ENGLISH BY CHINESE AMERICANS: THREE WRITERS, THREE GROUPS, AND THREE PERIODS Song Weijie(79) As part of American minority literature and even part of the entire American literature, the Chinese Americans' literature in English made its first appearance in the early 1970s and tends to come to the fore as a new force by the 1990s. According to their styles of writing, Chinese American writers may be divided into three groups, roughly corresponding to three periods of development of this literature. First, writers who submit to and identify with American literature; second, those who radically oppose stereotyped prejudices; and third, those who moderately criticize Western misinterpretations of the East. By depicting traits of three representatives of these writers, Pardee Lowe, Frank Chin and David Henry Hwang, this article tries to analyze the different stands and styles of the writings of Chinese American writers and their expressions of Chinese Americans' historical experiences.
