With the decline of military factors, the rise of economic factors, and the recombination of interests, getting adapted to changes will be the priority of American policies. THE IMPACT OF US-MEXICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT ON WORLD ECONOMIC PATTERN Li Yalian(18) The U.S.-Mexican free trade agreement, the first one between a rich state and a poor state, will not only be helpful to both U.S. and Mexican economies, but also promote the development of the three economic regions in the world. WALL STREET AND ECLECTRONIC AGE Xiao Chen(23) Along with the technical reform of means of transactions, American securities industry went through the stages of auction-oriented system and specialist-oriented system. Owing to the rise of "the third market" and "the fourth market", the American traditional securities industry centered at Wall Street is undergoing orientational changes. TVA Liu Xuyi(36) The Tennessee Valley Authority is an independent state-owned corporation which enjoys the flexibility of a private enterprise. It has won great achievements in flood control, developing tertiary industries and electric power. Its success is a typical case of the triumph of state monopoly capitalism over private monopoly capitalism. U.S. HUMAN RIGHTS DIPLOMACY AND GLOBAL STRATEGY Xiong Zhiyong(44) U.S. human rights diplomacy is colored by ideology, but, more importantly, is based on strategic needs. While adopting "selective" policies towards its allies and China, the United States used to take the Soviet Union for its main target for attack. However, the ideological color has become more marked and China is assailed with stronger criticism. US CONGRESS AND SINO-US RELATIONS Zheng Yongping(56) Reviewing the legislative process of the acts concerning China in the U.S. Congress from the summer of 1989 till 1990, the author tries to analyze the basic causes of the changes in the Congress' China policy by identifying the internal and external factors influencing the policy. LURE AND LOSS OF THE AMERICAN DREAM Pan Shaozhong(78) The "American Dream" finds its vivid expression in F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, whose hero pursues in Daisy not just his love, but the ideals she embodies. Despite his awareness that Daisy's charm is built on money, Gatsby persists in his illusion to his own destruction, a fact symbolic of the deadly lure of the siren-like "American Dream". THE INTRODUCTION OF AMERICAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY TO CHINA BEFORE 1949 Li Peishan(98) The United States was the pioneer in introducing modern sciences to China during the first half of the 20th century. The introduction was mainly through three channels: establishing universities and colleges in China, training Chinese students and scholars in the U.S., and funding research work in China. A STUDY OF AMERICAN MISSIONARY MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN BEIJING Ji Hong (116) Around the 1920s, American Christian missions in China had to readjust their educational policy in order to cope with the changed situation. As a result, the religious function of missionary middle schools declined steadily, while their educational function became more salient. Vocational education was emphasized to meet the needs of Chinese society. SOCIOLOGY OF THE CHICAGO SCHOOL: THEORY AND METHODOLOGY Qin Binxiang(136) American urban sociology was founded by the Chicago School. The School took the lead in applying human ecology to the study of urban structures and the process of change, and emphatically analyzed the entirely different life-styles in urban and agrarian areas. There are two approaches in the study, namely, the case study and the whole study. NOTES ON INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION: A READER Zhang Yuehong(151) The conflict between the modernization of culture and the diversity of national cultures is not a new proposition. This essay contains a review of the inherent causes of the conflict from the angle of intercultural communication and a study of the complementarity between the unified road to modernization and the pluralistic existence of cultural forms. INDEX OF ARTICLES FOR 1991 (158) AMERICAN STUDIES, a quarterly, is published jointly by the Chinese Association for American Studies, and the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
