The agenda included: Political and Strategic Relations (Contemporary), Political and Strategic Relations (Historical), Economic Relations, Cultural Relations and Educational Relations. ISOLATIONISM AND U.S. INTERVENTION IN ASIA Zhang Yebai(30) Historically, isolationism was directed at Europe, while U.S. intervention long prevailed in Asia. Neo-isolationism during the Vietnam War resulted in U.S. retraction in Asia and the rise of interventionism in the 1980s caused U.S. return to Asia. America will seek a new balance between the two “isms” and continue to get involved in Asian affairs. THE ASIA-PACIFIC REGION AND THE UNITED STATES IN THE 1990s Lu Lin(49) Problems in the region are complicated, mostly independent of one another and by and large irrelevant to U.S.-Soviet confrontation. Asia-Pacific nations lack common economic interests and political cohesive force. Hence the necessity of American involvement. The U.S. role in the region will be limited to one of a balancer rather than a leader. AMERICA'S STRATEGIC PRIORITIES IN EAST ASIA IN THE 20TH CENTURY Cai Jiahe(59) The United States rearranged its strategic priorities in East Asia several times in this century. China was positioned below Japan and Southeast Asia except during the Pacific War. The Eurocentric policy and ideological considerations did play an important role in the rearrangements. The lack of a long-term strategic plan and overemphasizing security and ideology may impair U.S. interests in East Asia. AMERICA AND THE POST-COLD-WAR BALANCE OF POWER IN SOUTHEAST ASIA Xu Xin(77) The United States, China, the Soviet Union and Japan are the most influential countries in the regional balance of power, but the role of the ASEAN should not be neglected either. These forces have constraining effect on each other. The United States will continue to be a major player in Southeast Asia, though it is retracting from the region. CHINESE AND U.S. ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AND INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION Mao Yushi(94) Comparing the factors affecting pollution in the U.S. and China, one can see that serious problems exist in both nations. While damages to environment are due to poverty and excessive exploitation of natural resources in China, they are caused by affluence in America. In resolving environmental issues through international cooperation, economic measures may be effective, but the force of ethics is more important. U.S. INVESTMENTS IN HONG KONG: MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES Sun Haishun(109) U.S. investments in the manufacturing industries of Hong Kong are characterized by large scale, stress on high-tech and fixed capitals, and priority of exclusive investment. Such investments will continue to grow in the next few years, but the rate of increase may decline. ERNEST HEMINGWAY AND CHINESE CONTEMPORARY WRITING KDong Hengxun (119) Hemingway's influence on Chinese contemporary writing can be found in some Chinese modern literature. His works provide for Chinese writers references for the art of story-telling which includes new perspective, new narrative style and skill. Once mastered by Chinese writers, these techniques will be integrated into Chinese traditional narrative art. UNCLE TOM'S CABIN IN CHINA Tao Jie (128) Uncle Tom's Cabinwas the first American novel translated into classical Chinese in 1901. In 1961 it was adapted into a play in China, but the plot was quite different from the original due to the “leftist” ideological impact. The novel was retranslated into spoken language in 1981 and then Chinese scholars began to analyse its structure, characterization, etc. U.S. MODERNIST MISSIONARIES AND REFORM OF CHINESE MISSIONARY SCHOOLS Shi Jinghuan(143) American modernist missionary educators in China formed their initial ideas in the 1990s and 1910s, but not until 1920 did they play any sensible role. They undertook reform in teaching and curriculum in missionary schools to meet Chinese social requirements. However, despite all their efforts, they could not resolve the contradiction with the Chinese society. AMERICAN STUDIES, a quarterly, is published jointly by the Chinese Association for American Studies, and the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The content of the articles in this journal should not be construed as reflecting the views either of the Association or the Institute.
