However, if the United States can not adopt effective policies to reverse the down-sliding tendency, it may in the long run take the dangerous road which led to the decline of the British Empire. ON THE U.S. CHINA POLICY OF EXPORT CONTROL AND ITS PROSPECT Zhang Hanlin & Cai Chunlin(21) Until mid 1989, the U.S. export control policy vis-a-vis China was gradually relaxed, but this tendency has come to a stop since 1989. This shift of policy has negative effects on the economy of both states, particularly serious for China. To change the situation, bilateral relations should be improved on the one hand and Chinese import-export policy and its implementation has to be more flexible on the other. AMERICAN STOCK EXCHANGES AND THEIR TRANSACTIONS Fang Shaowei(37) The stock exchange is an essential part of the capitalist enterprise system. The New York Stock Exchange is the first of its kind in the U.S. in terms of size, organization, equipment, management and influence. Transactions in stock exchanges can only be conducted according to fixed rules. Spot transaction is the basic mode of stock exchange business. THE ORIGIN OF POST-WAR U.S. KOREA POLICY Nui Jun(50) During WWII, guidelines of Korea policy of the Roosevelt and Truman adminstrations were to prevent a big power, mainly the Soviet Union, from monopolizing Korea and to avoid projecting excessive forces in Korea while assuming too many responsibilities. With the aggravation of the cold war, the U.S. gradually changed its plan for international trusteeship of Korea into the policy of containing the Soviet Union by "collective security" through the United Nations. THE CAUSE OF THE ESCALATION OF VIETNAM WAR Shi Yinhong(67) The root cause of Vietnam War escalation lay in President Johnson's policy of "attacking North Vietnam and saving South Vietnam" to reverse the rapidly worsening military situation. The policy was implemented through four stages: intensifying clandestine warfare, deliberating and working on the plan to bomb North Vietnam, creating the Gulf of Tokin incident and adopting the Gulf of Tonkin resolution in Congress. CHINESE POLITICAL COMMENTATORS' COMMENTS ON NEW DEAL IN THE 1930S-1940S Yang Yusheng(86) During the 1930s-1940s, Chinese political commentators paid wide attention to President Roosevelt's New Deal. They gave it more negative than positive assessement in the 1930s and held that it would fall short of final success. Most scholars considered the Silver Loan in New Deal as "economic aggression" against China. Not until the 1940s did press circles in China begin to make fairer evaluation. EVANGELICAL PROTESTANTISM AND ITS IMPACT IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 19TH CENTURY Zhang Minqian(118) Along with the "Great Revival", the expansion of Evangelical Protestantism and the enhancement of the various Protestant movements' influence, Evangelical Protestantism provided valuable spiritual motivation for the American social reform and promoted its process. The Probihition, educational reform, anti-slavery movements and the movement for women's rights were major manifestations of this impact. THE MAKING AND EFFECTS OF U.S. IMMIGRATION QUOTA SYSTEMS IN THE 1920S Gao Jianguo (138) The U.S. immigration quota system which emerged in the 1920s underwent a process from the initial and provisional limiting measures to a system based on national native place quota. The essence was the quantitative restriction presupposing qualitative selection. The quota system had wide influence on the moving-in of immigrants and U.S. social economy and provided a foundation for further development. ATTENTION SHOULD BE PAID TO INFORMATION COLLECTION IN AMERICAN STUDIES Wang Xi(158) For up-to-standard academic research the constant availability of systematized and retrievable information of precursors is indispensable. Though domestic institutions concerned have done some work on cataloguing and indexing of China's American studies, It is still far from being adequate. The publication of Compilation of Theses Topics on China's American Studies signifies a progress of our work. AMERICAN STUDIES, a quarterly, is published jointly by the Chinese Association for American Studies, and the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The content of the articles in this journal should not be construed as reflecting the views either of the Association or the Institute.
