The three major subjects covered were political and strategic relations, economic and technological cooperation, and cultural exchanges. This article summarizes the main arguments. CONVERGENCE OF INTERESTS: BASIS FOR RELATIONS AMONG NATIONS Zi Zhongyun (16) In this comprehensive analysis of the basis for and development of Sino-U.S. relations in the last decade, the author argue that the relations are based on the convergence of both countries' interests, that there is a large area in which the two countries' national interests converge, and that, therefore, Sino-U.S. relations are expected to further develop despite differences and difficulties. U.S. CONGRESS AND SINO-U.S. RELATIONS IN THE LAST DECADE Zhang Yi (37) Using data from various congressional documents, the author finds that realism and anti-communist ideology are the two major determinants of congressional attitudes and policies towards China. Realism accounts for the congressional contribution to the development of Sino-U.S. relations, whereas anti-communist ideology largely explains some congressional actions which have caused problems for the bilateral relations. SEARCHING FOR THE NEXT HEIGHT IN SINO-U.S. RELATIONS Li Guoyou (55) Common strategic concerns provided the original stimulus for developing Sino-U.S. relations. New momentum can be found in Sino-U.S. cooperation in the knowledge-intensive sector, including professional service and training and exchange of brain resources. A four-dimension and three-layer's scheme of analysis is used by the author to buttress his contention. REFLECTIONS ON CHINESE INTELLECTUALS' VIEWS OF AMERICA Yuan Ming (72) America has been linked with the miseries and aspirations of the Chinese people. Political environment and China's need for enlightenment and national salvation in its modern history have strongly influenced the views by three generations of Chinese intellectuals regarding America. Recent opinions of America are linked to reflections on China's own traditional ? culture. PURPOSES AND CONSTRAINTS OF U.S.-SOVIET NUCLEAR ARMS CONTROL TALKS Cao Ye & Chen Yingxuan (88) Because of nuclear weapons' enormous destruction power and their vulnerability to strikes, negotiations on their reduction have become an integral part of both U.S. and Soviet security strategies. The need for arms development, U.S.-Soviet political relations and changes in the balance of power are the three major constraints for nuclear arms control talks. HISTORICAL EVOLUTION AND PRESENT STATE OF MODERN ECONOMICS IN THE UNITED STATES Cui Yonglie (108) The center of western economics moved from Britain to the United States after the war. The two major schools of economic theory in U.S. today, the neo-classical theory and monetarism, differ in methodology as well as in policy preferences. Future development of economics will be characterized by integration of different schools, the broadening of the subject matter and an emphasis on sectorial economic analysis. CHANGES IN SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND NEW DEVELOPMENTS IN AMERICAN SOCIOLOGY Deng Fang (129) History of American sociology has shown that it is very important for sociologists to distinguish social problems that derive from changes in social structure. A major social problem in the U.S. today is an asymmetric structure of social responsibility. The focus of American sociology is shifting from the study of how social system influences individual actions to the study of how individual purposive actions are combined into behavior of a social system. LOS ANGELES: THE EASTERN CAPITAL OF THE PACIFIC(PART II) Wang Shouzhi (144) Los Angeles has become the economic and financial center of the U.S. west coast. Its economic development has also led to cultural prosperity and post-industrial style of work and life. The city's problems, though many, can be solved through decentralization. It is the author's view that Los Angeles could become the eastern capital of the Pacific in the 21st century. AMERICAN STUDIES, a quarterly, is published jointly by the Chinese Association for American Studies, and the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The content of the articles in this journal should not be construed as reflecting the views either of the Association or the Institute.
