S. RELATIONS Zi Zhongyun (7) In the period from the end of the 50's to that of the 60's, there was a thaw in the attitude toward China in the American public opinion, which prepared the ground for President Nixon's decision to open up U. S. -China relations. By reviewing the important discussions which took place in the United States about U. S. policy towards China during this period, the article explores the interrelationship and interaction among the elite opinion, the public opinion and the decision-making of the U. S. government. It also compares China with the United States in this respect. VIOLENCE IN AMERICA AND ITS ROOTS IN TRADITION Dong Leshan ( 36) The author traces the roots of violence in America from historical, social and political perspectives and concludes that violence has made inroads on American national character, as evidenced by tolerance toward violence and hero-worship of the lawless. THE SOCIAL-HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF RONALD REAGAN'S ELECTION Liu Xuyi ( 51) At the time when Ronald Reagan's second administration is drawing near to an end, the author makes an analysis of the social-historical background of his election in 1980, hoping it would be helpful in forecasting the results of the next presidential election. ON W. A. P. MARTIN'S CONFUCIANISM-PLUS-CHRISTIANITY Zhao Yi ( 69) Analyzing the American missionary W. A. P. Martin's efforts to integrate some of the concepts and beliefs found in Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism and the Chinese ancestral rites with Christianity in order to Christianize China, this essay contends that it was hard for the missionary to achieve his ends because of the huge and numerous discrepancies and conflicts between the western and Chinese cultures. AMERICAN PAINTING AND THE “TRADITION” Wu Jiafeng ( 87) Focussing on the American art in the colonial period and the early years of the United States with a reference to some modern forms, the author, known for his deep insight in the comparative study of Eastern and Western arts, presents an original view on the tradition of American painting. THE CONDITIONS OF CHINESE-AMERICANS --- PAST AND PRESENT: AN OVERVIEW Chen Yaoguang (113) A brief survey in four parts of the conditions of the Chinese-Americans in the past decades: History in Retrospect, World War II: the Turning Point, Developments Since the Mid-Sixties, and Situation in Prospect. THE LOST GENERATION: ITS INTELLECTUAL AND CULTURAL DIMENSIONS Zhao Yifan (128) The Lost Generation in the Twenties has been studied in China chiefly as a literary movement. Yet as an intellectual and cultural phenomenon it involves much more. Here is an interdisciplinary study that follows a new orientation. INTERVIEW WITH DONG HENGXUN, THE CO-AUTHOR OF A SHORT HISTORY OF AMERICAN LITERATURE Our Reporter (147) Dong Hengxun, senior fellow at the Institute of Foreign Literature, CASS, talks about the writing of the first Chinese book on the history of American literature. In two volumes his work places stress on modern and contemporary periods. He proposes that the study of American literature in China be conducted in three fields, namely, book reviewing, comprehensive research and studies in particular features of American literature. AMERICAN STUDIES, a quarterly, is published jointly by the Chinese Association for American Studies, and the Institute of American Studies, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. The content of the articles in this journal should not be construed as reflecting the views either of the Association or the Institute.
