An Analytical History of the 2000 U.S. Presidental Election Wang Xi(7) Why did the 2000 United States presidential election fail to produce an undisput able winner? To answer the question, the paper examines the evolution of the Ame rican presidential electoral process, by a comprehensive and coherent narrative of the events during the 2000 election and its subsequent legal battles over the Florida recount. Reflecting back the election events and disputes, the paper an alyzes how such factors as the inconsistence and confusion of the electoral laws , the politicization of the legal system, the partisan influences over the elect oral process at different levels, and the effects of money contributed to the da ngerous political deadlock in NovemberDecember 2000. While the anachronistical and flawed electoral process contributed directly to the failure of the electio n, the author argues, the legal battles that followed further revealed the undem ocratic elements of the process.
